RESEARCH

The research area is a responsibility of the Vice-Rector for Research, who, supported by the Senate committees and Vice-Deans, acts as a supervisor of three central units: the Research Department, the Apparatus Department, the Patent Agent and the Academic Computer Network.
The University focuses its research and development activities on the developing of basic sciences, the upgrading of academic staff qualifications and unit scientific specializations, and solving technological problems prioritized by the University policy.
The research and development activities fall into three categories:

  1. basic research - theoretical and experimental  studies which aim at the advancement of knowledge about causes of phenomena and facts, conducted without any practical end in mind;
  2. applied research - conducted with a view to providing innovative practical solutions to technical problems through a search either for new applications for basic research results or for possible solutions ensuring predetermined practical outcomes;
  3. industrial (development) research -  includes the problems of design, technology, projects and experimental results which build the stock of knowledge that is reused to improve or develop new materials, equipment, processes, systems or services.

Research activities are funded from several sources:

  1. funds transferred by the competent ministry and intended for statutory activity: own research and testing, the purchasing or building of new testing equipment, investment and cooperation;
  2. financial means allocated by the competent ministry for research-related programs - grants (own, promoter, habilitation, development and targeted research projects) on the basis of well-defined research proposals and, upon approval, agreements signed with the ministry;
  3. international foundations means awarded to Polish and international research teams;
  4. funding from businesses commissioning research performed by accredited laboratories with specialized equipment and methods.

Specialist laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art test instrumentation allow conducting investigations in the field of automatic control and robotics, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanics, mechatronics, metrology and laser technology.
The University provides a wide range of research services such as expert appraisements, technical reports, chemical and technical analyses of materials, testing and certification, and security systems efficiency testing.  Full details are available on the University websites.
Some of the research projects are co-financed by the European Union within the following programmes:

  1. Sectoral Operational Programme "Improvement of the Competitiveness of Enterprises";
  2. European Regional Development Fund;
  3. Leonardo da Vinci
  4. Integrated Operational Programme for Regional Development.
